Riga is the capital of Latvia and it is located in the northern part of Europe. Lying in the Gulf of Riga, it is an important seaport and industrial, commercial, cultural and financial center for the region that surrounds it. There are many things that make this city worth visiting and this is demonstrated by the simple thing that in 2014 it will be the European Capital of Culture. It is very well known for its Art Nouveau architecture and as well the 19th wooden one.

Riga is separated in two different parts – the Old City and the New Town. In the old city you will see the elegant at nouveau buildings and the rest of the town where remains from the communism period can be sizable. These can be seen everywhere, in the way people are, in the way streets are, the shops are and everything is.

The art nouveau architecture that this city adopted in the late 19th century was known in Riga as “Jugendstil”. This is a term that was taken from another movement that was in Germany – “Jugend” which actually means “youth”. Each architectural style has the possibility of being personalized according to the country it is in and the community it serves. Therefore, art nouveau had two different directions in Riga –as in one direction of decorative and another one of romantic and nationalistic style. Many buildings that represent the art nouveau style were designed by really Latvian architects. The most famous of them proved to be Mikhail Eisenstein. To be able to see how everything mingled one should go along the Elizabetes and Alberta streets.
What can you see in Riga? You can see the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, the Mezaparks, the Vermanes Park, Riga Cathedral, Saint Peter’s Church, the Nouveau District which will take you through and entire travel in time, the Latvian National opera House, the Freedom Monument, the Laima Clock, the Livu Square, the Dome Square, the Academy of Science Building, the Dome Square
Apart from these above, there are many things to do here, as in visiting clubs, restaurants, museums, cinemas, theaters. Enjoy!
