Of all the wars the United States has
been involved in, the Civil War is the one that most people seem to be
the most interested in. There are many reasons that people find this
war interesting which can include the fact that it was fought on
American soil between Americans, the issues that brought about the Civil
War, and many other reasons. Every year people visit the many
different battlefields and for school children that live near these
battlefields, it means a school field trip in which to actually see
where not only history took place but was made. There have also been
many movies made and books written, both fiction and non-fiction about
the Civil War.
Top 10 bloodiest battles of the Civil War
Here are the top ten bloodiest battles of the Civil War, when they took place, and casualties.
1- Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—July
1-3, 1863. The Union was the winner of the battle but it cost them
twenty three thousand soldiers. It cost the Confederates twenty eight
thousand soldiers.
2- Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia—September
19-20, 1863. The Confederates won this battle but it cost them
eighteen thousand four hundred fifty four soldiers. It cost the Union
sixteen thousand one hundred and seventy soldiers.
3- Battle of Spotsylvania Court House,
Virginia—May 2-21, 1864. It is not known whether the Union or the
Confederate won this battle but it cost the Union eighteen thousand
soldiers. It cost the Confederate twelve thousand soldiers.
4- Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia—May
5-7, 1864. The Confederates won this battle but how many each side
lost is not known. All that is known is that there were twenty five
thousand four hundred sixteen soldiers lost.
5- Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia—May
1-4, 1863. The Confederates won this battle but it cost them ten
thousand soldiers. It cost the Union fourteen thousand soldiers.
6- Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee—May
1-4, 1862. While the Union lost more soldiers it was a tactical
victory for the North. It cost the Union thirteen thousand and forty
seven soldiers. It cost the Confederate ten thousand six hundred and
ninety-nine soldiers.
7- Battle of Stone’s River, Tennessee—December
31, 1862-January 2, 1863. The Union one this battle with a lost of
thirteen thousand two hundred forty nine soldiers. It cost the
Confederates ten thousand two hundred sixty-six soldiers.
Battle of Antietam, Maryland—September
16-18, 1862. The result as to who won the battle is inconclusive but
it did give the North a strategic advantage. It is also not know what
it cost each side in casualties but there were a total of twenty three
thousand one hundred soldiers lost.
9- Second Battle of Bull Run, Manassas, Virginia—August
28-30. It was a victory for the Confederacy which cost them eight
thousand three hundred and fifty soldiers. It cost the Union thirteen
thousand eight hundred and thirty soldiers.
10- Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee—February
13-16, 1862. It was a victory for the Union which cost them two
thousand three hundred and thirty-one soldiers. It cost the Confederate
fifteen thousand sixty-seven soldiers.
In these ten bloodiest battles of the
Civil War alone, it cost the Confederate army one hundred thirteen
thousand one hundred soldiers and it cost the Union one hundred twelve
thousand eight hundred and seventy-six soldiers. There were also forty
eight thousand five hundred sixteen soldiers that died but was not known
just how many were Confederate and just how many were Union soldiers.
This was a lot of men and boys to lose in just ten battles and there
were many, many other battles also fought during the four years of the
Civil War.
