1- The Lady Vanishes (1938)

Ikiru is one of Spielberg’s favorites and so is ours.

3- Cat on a hot tin roof (1958)

Elizabeth Taylor plays Maggie the wife of Paul Newman a former football player who is seen drinking and staggering throughout most of the film. His character is quite versatile as he tries to jump hurdles becomes moody, introverted and withdrawn, he is passive and weak. His greedy lawyer brother awaits Big Daddy’s death so he and his wife could inherit the vast piece of land.

4- The Nun's Story (1959)

Gabrielle Van der Mal is a morally powerful girl who tries with all her might to become an obedient servant of the Catholic Church. She pushes her personal feeling and wishes aside as she makes her journey from the young Belgian girl to an experienced nursing nun. This is a no nonsense film that has some wonderful touching moments but also some traumatic scenes in a mental institution.

5- Pickpocket (1959)

Robert Bresson draws some naturalistic performances from a not so professional cast. It is one of his most fascinating cinematic works. HIs fluidity and spectacular bag of signature tricks make it a must for any foreign film fan.

Women in Love is one of the most dramatic literary adaptations, ever to grace the silver screen. This magnificent piece of not only does justice to D. H. Lawrence’s novel but more importantly to his vision. Alan Bates plays Rupert Birkin the protagonist. Oliver Reed, Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden play the supporting roles. The film pays tribute to Lawrence’s quotes like, “But Better Die than Live Mechanically a Life That Is a Repetition of Repetitions.”

Eventually his problems grow into more complex issues of love, compassion and forgiveness.

Billy Bob Thornton portrays John Ritter who is recently released from a mental institution. The film focuses on his struggles to cope with the outside world and his relations with strangers whom he lives with. With some great acting, it sure is an interesting masterpiece.

There are times when you end up watching a movie that you may have heard nothing about. Everyone from the cast, director to the name of the movie is unknown. This is the case with the Australian flipper, The Castle. The story is mostly about an Australian family who are struggling to keep their home, after being given a notice that the airport needs expanding and their house is in the way. That’s all there is to the plot, enjoy.

10- Marley & Me (2008)

Marley & Me is adapted from John Grogan’s book of the same title. It is a sad but realistic tale of the life and death of a young writer (played by Owen Wilson) and his Labrador Marley. The film depicts a simple story coupled with some big names. Jennifer Aniston plays the role of Owen’s wife Jennifer Grogan to perfection; it is as if she put her own life on screen as Jennifer Grogan.
